Medical Laboratory Science is an important subject in the field of Medicine. In each system of Medicine, Diagnosis of disease is primary step because no treatment is possible without a proper diagnosis. It is the Medical Laboratory Technical staffs, who perform this important task by various scientific tools and techniques. In modern world of Technology the Diagnosis, Treatment & Prognosis of various Diseases depends on results of the investigations carried out in a Clinical Laboratory. Thus Medical Laboratory Technical staff plays a key role in the field of health Care. Medical Laboratory Technology has played a significant role in the advancement in the field of Medicine, especially in past few decades. Modern medicine is becoming more and more a team effort, and the Medical Technical staff is an important member and integral part of the Medical team. In reality this is a “PROFESSION”, not just a “JOB”. And as a profession, emphasis is always aimed at giving the best services to the patients, who are served by the medical team.
Scope & Career in Medical Laboratory Technology
There is a plethora of options for students to make a successful career in the sphere of healthcare. Undoubtedly, the Doctor is the most prestigious and high-paid profession in the healthcare sector, but the only Doctor is not everything in this sector. Some other allied sectors play an instrumental role in the functioning of the entire healthcare system. Medical Laboratory is an integral part, where blood test, urine test, stool test, and other tests happen that helps doctors in the diagnosis of illness. Pursuing courses in Medical Laboratory Technology unlocks the doors of great careers.
Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT) course is a diploma level programme of three/two years and six/twelve months (internship of six/twelve months) which is concerned with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases using clinical laboratory tests. The programme, students learn the basics of testing, detect, diagnose, and treat diseases. Besides, students also learn to collect information, sampling, testing, reporting, and documentation of these investigations. Some core subjects in Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT) course are Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Microbiology, Research, Environmental Science & Health, etc.
· Upon completion of Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT), a person can find employment opportunities in various educational institutes, private, and government hospitals.
· After gaining substantial experience a person can run his/her own laboratory consultancy services, health care centers.
· There is also an option of higher studies, upon completion of Diploma. Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT) course, a person can go for a under graduate’s degree and then further studies.
· Upon completion of the course, a person also can make career in product development, marketing, sales, quality assurance, environmental health, and insurance.
· Major employment areas are-Biotechnology Research Laboratory (Tissue Culture), Blood Donor Centres, Colleges & Universities, Hospitals, Military Services, etc.
Medical Laboratory Technology – Objectives
The program objectives are derived from five domains of NSQF Level namely Process, Professional Knowledge, Professional Skill, Core Skill, Responsibility. After completing this programme, the student will be able to:
PO1: Perform tasks in limited range of activities, familiar situation with clear choice of procedures.
PO2: Acquire knowledge of principles and processes in the field of Medical Laboratory Technology
PO3: Develop skills to accomplish quality tasks and solve problems using methods, tools, materials and information.
PO4: Demonstrate skill of communication, basic mathematics, collecting and organizing information along with knowledge of social, political and natural environment.
PO5: Take the responsibility of own works and supervises others work.
PO6: Select multidisciplinary and open subjects of own interest and perform self learning through Massive Open Online Courses.
